Habits that are destroying our mental health

Mental health is talked about quite a lot now, slowly the stigma surrounding mental health seems to be disappearing.

Why is it that mental health has become a concern suddenly?

Mental health affects our thoughts, actions and how we navigate the stresses and challenges of today’s world.

With our lifestyle becoming faster, food choices changing and the impact of social media increasing mental health disorders affect young teens as well as adults these days.

Caring for our mental health takes a back seat in all this rush, we don’t even realise the things that we do daily and how they harm us.

Bad mental health habits affect the way we think and feel about ourselves.

Just like eating pizza for dinner every day will lead to an increase in cholesterol and blocked arteries. Bad mental health habits will also lead to anxiety, panic, depression and anger.

What are these habits that negatively affect our mental health?

  1. Overuse of social media- staying connected and updated is good, but spending too much time on social media can affect your self-image and self-esteem and lead to stress and anxiety.

Cyberbullying, fear of missing out and gadget addiction are the side effects of the overuse of social media.

  1. Lack of exercise- sitting is the new smoking they say, moving your body is one of the most underrated things you can do to boost your mental health.

Exercise releases endorphins which uplift mood and help beat stress. You don’t have to go to the gym if you don’t like that, indulge in any type of physical activity like walking, running, swimming or dancing.

  1. Comparing your life to others- the grass is always greener on the other side. With the rise in social media and different updates and so on, we tend to constantly look at others and compare ourselves to them. We always find faults and shortcomings, whether it is our body, car,  career or friends. This leads to a lot of negative self-talk, low self-esteem and confidence.

  1. Not getting enough sleep- a good night’s sleep is another underrated thing. Sleep is required not only for physical but also for mental health. Adults on average require 7-8 hours of sleep every day. Lack of sleep leads to mood changes, cranky behaviour, and unclear mind.

  1. Isolating yourself- humans are social creatures so we need to mix and mingle. Hang out with your friends once now and then. Spend time with your family.

  1. Bad diet- Skipping breakfast or dinner. Having sugary cereals or fast food every day. Diet plays a huge part in our mental health as well. Eating sugary, starchy foods that are low in nutrients doesn’t give us the required nutrition and also leads to sugar crashes.

A healthy diet should include vegetables, grains and fruits.

These small habits play a big role in our mental health. Drinking water, eating right, moving your body, taking care of yourself and having a good support system are the start to a good and well-balanced life.
